Dimension Data Saturday school programme improves maths and scie

After attending 90 Saturday classes over the past two years, 42 students have graduated from the Dimension Data Saturday School programme. Convergence Partners has been one of the partners to Dimension Data for this programme.

Mpho Sesinyi emerged as the overall top performer in all subjects at the Dimension Data Saturday School Class of 2012 graduation ceremony on Friday 7 December 2012. He scored the highest overall mark (81%) and also achieved 79% for English and 91% for Mathematics.

The second overall best student award jointly went to Sibusiso Khoza and Surprise Manamela with a mark of 78%, with Siyavuya Dambuza fourth with a mark of 77%. Thomas Matsema was recognised as the most improved learner.

“Although the Saturday School programme is coupled with fun and exciting activities, it is most definitely not a child’s play. There is a high level of commitment required from all learners in order to be successful at the end of the two year programme. To date the Saturday School programme has yielded 100% pass rates over the past 17,” says Zandile Mbele, transformation executive at Dimension Data Middle East and Africa.

The Dimension Data Saturday School Programme is a two year initiative that benefits 100 grade 11 and 12 pupils from 21 public high schools in Gauteng each year. The learners in the programme come from schools in Alexandra, Diepsloot, Steeldale, Thokoza, Thembisa, Turfontein, Florida and Brixton. Learners in the programme attend  additional classes in Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Sciences, English, Computer Studies and Soft Skills. Furthermore, the grade 12 learners participate in the company’s work experience initiative where they are educated on various career opportunities available at Dimension Data and are exposed to the corporate world.

The success of the Saturday School programme has seen the programme’s partners increase in 2012. The additional partners include Belgium Campus; Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA); National Economic Education Trust (NEET) and the University of Johannesburg.

“These partnerships are a noteworthy endorsement of the Saturday School programme and will enable Dimension Data to continue investing in young South Africans and most importantly in building the leaders of tomorrow,” says Mbele.
